The Next New Thing

Posted: December 10, 2012 in Uncategorized

Something that I would like to be appear in new media is probably a 24/7 online nurse help service. For example when a person is sick and he would like to get some medical advice, he would be able to log online and connect with one of the nurses, describe his symptoms and get some advice on what to do. This would save us so much money on unnecessary ER visits and also the wait time for a person with some serious problems. I would like to see this kind of service because I have a lot of friends who are doctors and they tell me stories how people come to ER for no reason and waste everyone’s time and also I have experienced a very long waiting time which could be eliminated with this kind of service.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Posted: December 10, 2012 in Uncategorized

Privacy and confidentiality is a huge issue for new media. Majority number of people use social websites such as facebook and myspace to connect with others. One huge issue with those social sites is that when you upload or post something on to them, it tends to hunt you later. I believe that these social sites neglect our right to privacy and confidentiality. Also, there has been something going around facebook which warns their clients that facebook will now posses a right to give out your private information to other parties and if you were against that, you need to make a post stating that you do not give them that right. My word of advice would be- if you don’t want something to come back to you a week or a year later, keep it to yourself and don’t post on internet.

P2P File Sharing

Posted: December 5, 2012 in Uncategorized

File sharing is a process of distribution or providing access to certain files.

P2P sharing is also known as peer-to-peer sharing. When individuals exchange files between one another.  P2P can be set up at home,  in office or using a network. Individuals share files such as videos, music, data or anything else in digital format.

Some examples of P2P sharing is Kazaa which is mentioned in an article “$1.5 Million Fine for Downloading 24 Songs”, where a woman used this software to download songs with out authorization from the original owner. She later on gets sued for 1.5 Million for only 24 songs which could have cost her $24 on Itunes.

Another 2 examples of P2P sharing is Napster where you can stream music on to your computer; and Gnutella which is decentralized peer-to-peer network.

Creativity

Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?

by Brooks Barne talks about how people edit Disney cartoon movies with characters such as Winnie the Pooh by plugging in a rap song. One of the famous conversions was made with Winnie the Pooh and Soulja Boy, “Crank that”. Users displayed the original Disney cartoon while they inserted a rap song, which made it look like the characters were dancing to it. I think its a great how new media (youtube) is used to share its creativity with the rest of the world. It uses something from the past (Disney characters) and mashes it with something modern (rap music).

One way that virtual worlds can be used, is to reconstruct old memories. In the article “In Room 100, it’s Sid and Nancy all over again”, author talks about a hotel in Chelsea, New York, which was very famous for it’s bohemian life, pigeonhole mailboxes and Bob Dylan’s room. After their management was replaced by the corporate management team, hotel was never the same again. Thank you to Mr. Brown, who made a 3D replica of the old Chelsea hotel, it is back to life! Mr. Brown used Second Life program which creates a virtual world. He used old photos to re create the exact replica of the famous hotel. Even though in reality Chelsea hotel is no longer the same, people still get to enjoy it virtually!

iReport: “Naughty Aunties” battle autism with virtual interaction by Nicole Saidi talks about how people who posses different conditions of autism use virtual world to find answers and get support. David Savill, a 22 year old who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, created a life looking avatar to interact with other users. He explains that virtual world makes it easier for him to interact with other people, making it a more comfortable setting, where people can interact and discuss their conditions, find support and answers to some questions. It’s a great way for people who have these conditions and don’t feel comfortable meeting face to face.
I don’t think virtual world has any cons besides people spending hours and hours online rather than interaction with life people. I remember when I used to play Sims on my Playstation System, I would be home playing it for 8 hours a day instead of socializing with my real friends.

I think in future we are going to see more of virtual world. I think it will be a lot more advanced, where you will be able to create avatars that look exactly like them. I also think that medical field is going to do something with virtual world, maybe have a virtual nurse, which will take you through steps before you rush to emergency room due to high number of patients who just have a slight fever and they already rush in to ER. I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

Social Networking Sites

Posted: October 27, 2012 in Uncategorized

I visited 4 social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and OkCupid.

Myspace is a site where you can write something about yourself, upload different gifs to make your profile stand out, upload music so people can listen to a song while they are on your page, also it has a bar which can say whether you are online or not. On the left side it has your profile picture and age, location and when was the last time you logged in.

Twitter has a small default picture on the left side, it shows how many people you are following, who is following you and how many tweets you made.  On the right side it shows all of your followers tweets in chronological order. When someone tweets something you can add a hashtag to link people to a tweet.

Facebook is similar to twitter. It doesn’t have as many fancy options myspace with changing background and adding music and gifs. On facebook you can change your status, post pictures, people can send you invites to certain events, you also have game applications, you have an option to  “poke” people to get their attention.

OkCupid is mostly a dating site. Where you write about yourself, your interests, likes and dislikes. You can upload many pictures of yourself. There is also this fun option where you put in your preference in a person, likes and dislikes and the site measures your compatibility. It recommends you which people are similar to you in preferences.

We all use or heard of sites such as FaceBook, MySpace, Linkedin and etc. They are all a part of our societies Social Network. People use such sites for  either fun, communication with other people, marketing/advertisement of products/services or even for job opportunities.

“Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting”, by Frank Langfitt talks about a site called Linkedin, where an individual can create a profile and build connections  with professionals, which can lead to job opportunities. Linkedin is free and easy to use. It allows both a prospective employee and employer both to search for their perfect fit.

Another great article that I read is called “Whats Next? Your future in social networking”. Author quotes, ‘

Social networks allow businesses to collaborate with all kinds of people, with diverse backgrounds and different levels of expertise, from locations all over the world.”

He explains that there is more than one way to communicate with people and it doesn’t always has to be face-to face to be effective. People all around the world use social networks to communicate and discuss new business plans. He says that insurance company can use facebook to find out what are some of the concerns of their customers without asking them, but rather just looking at their facebook status.

The negative side of social networks is privacy. A lot of material that you publish on the internet can not be erased or taken back. Let’s say you went out  the previous night, had too much to drink and didn’t make it to work next day. You decided to make up some story to your boss about some stomach virus you caught from eating at a new taco joint right by your house. Well… it’s just your luck, because your friends posted pictures of you from that wild night before and tagged you with a quote “Fun times before the hang over”, on facebook. You are pretty much screwed, if you have your boss or a co-worker who doesn’t like you on your “friends” list.

The same thing with pictures, anyone can save pictures that you post on your social sites, so even if you erase them, they still can be stored somewhere on someones computer.

Social networking is a great, you just need to be careful with how you use it.

Blogs vs Wikis

Posted: October 12, 2012 in Uncategorized

Both Blogs and Wikis are a part of our social media category. The main difference between blogs and wikis is that blogs are created by a single author and can not be edited by anyone else, but comments on blogs are always welcomed. Wikis, on the other hand are a collaboration of individuals, where different people can edit or delete information. Basically, there is more than one author compared to blogs.

Both wikis and blogs are great tools that make it easier for groups to converge. In the article “ Brooklyn Blogs Lead to Drug Raid”, author describes how Bay RIdge residents used blogs to lead to a crack house. Neighbors used to blog about a specific residence with suspicious activity, such as: cars driving by at all different hours, loud fighting that was going on for years, and men chasing people with stick. This all led to an investigation by 68th Precinct and later on to an arrest of 5 people. What a great community clean up by Bay Ridge bloggers!

Another great article that I read which talks about important of wikis in our world is “How to Use WIkis for Business” The author discusses how frustrating and time consuming document management can be. Making sure everyone gets that email, some of the email addresses are wrong or missing,  or keeping up with the recent versions of spreadsheets is a nightmare since it gets passed on from one individual to another, and etc. He explains that use of wikis can help eliminated all of that mess and frustration and save people time! All you have to do is enter wikis collaboration software, which will enable people get access to the same documents and update or edit information for everyone to use, and the software is relatively easy to use so you dont have to be a computer expert.

Wikis and Blogs are a great way for people to converge in a project. It can be as simple stuff such as child’s school schedule, where parents can inform one another on things such as dates when school is closed, things that need to be brought to school by a child, or test exams; Or they can be used for more complex projects such as work, where employees will be sharing different information, and documents. Either way wikis and blogs are easy to use and are a great way to share information.

My project will talk social networking, what role does it play in todays society and whether its better or worse than the real thing. I will include personal experience on social net-working. I will discuss how serious people take social sites, how sometimes people get in to conflicts with people that they don’t know in a social site. How celebrities use social sites. How many hours people spend on social networking and what role does it play in their lives.
